PEX pipe (cross-linked polyethylene pipe) and PPR pipe (random copolymer polypropylene pipe) are two common water pipe materials. They have significant differences in material properties, installation methods, and applicable scenarios. The following are the main differences between the two:

1. Material properties

  • PEX pipe

◆The raw material is high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and the performance is enhanced by chemical or physical cross-linking processes.

◆Good flexibility, can be bent and laid, and the number of joints is reduced.

◆Excellent low-temperature resistance, strong frost resistance, suitable for cold areas.

◆Good tolerance to chlorine and chemicals, but easy to age under long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays.

  • PPR pipe

◆The raw material is random copolymer polypropylene, which is a thermoplastic plastic and is connected by hot melt.

◆Strong rigidity, cannot be bent, and needs to be connected by pipe fittings.

◆Outstanding high temperature resistance, long-term working temperature can reach 70°C, short-term high temperature resistance above 95°C.

◆Weak UV resistance, usually requires concealed installation (buried in the wall or underground).

2. Installation method

  • PEX pipe

◆There are various connection methods: compression type, clamp type, flare type, etc., which require special tools and metal joints.

◆It can be bent flexibly, suitable for complex wiring, and reduce water leakage points.

◆It is fast to install, suitable for DIY or quick projects.

  • PPR pipe

◆Must be hot-melt welded, which requires professional equipment and skilled technology.

◆The joints are fused into one, with strong sealing and almost no risk of water leakage.

◆The rigid structure requires more pipes and has low wiring flexibility.

3. Performance comparison

Characteristic PEX pipe PPR pipe
High temperature resistance General (long-term ≤60°C) Excellent (long-term ≤70°C)
Pressure resistance High (especially suitable for high-pressure cold water) Medium (suitable for medium and low pressure hot and cold water)
Freeze resistance Excellent (can resist repeated freezing and thawing) General (brittle at low temperature)
Service life About 50 years About 50 years
Environmental protection Care should be taken as some contain chemical cross-linking agents No additives, more environmentally friendly

4. Application scenarios

  • PEX pipe

◆Floor heating system: good flexibility, suitable for coil laying.

◆Cold water pipe: commonly used for household water supply in Europe and the United States.

◆Renovation project: easy to install in a small space.

  • PPR pipe

◆Hot and cold water pipe: the first choice for household water supply in Asia.

◆Exposure pipe: need to be used away from light (such as sheathed pipe).

◆High temperature water system: such as solar hot water pipe.

5. Cost difference

  • Material cost: PEX pipe is more expensive, PPR pipe is more economical.
  • Installation cost: PEX relies on joints, and the long-term maintenance cost may be slightly higher; PPR hot melt connection has a low one-time cost, but requires professional workers.

6. Health and environmental protection

  • PPR pipe: non-toxic and odorless, hot melt connection has no chemical pollution, and can be directly used for drinking water.
  • PEX pipe: some types contain chemical cross-linking agents (such as PEX-b), and brands that meet drinking water standards must be selected.

How to choose?

  • Choose PEX pipe: floor heating, cold areas, complex wiring, and quick installation requirements.
  • Choose PPR pipes: high temperature water system, limited budget, focus on environmental protection, long-term stable use.
